Scientists have used a new vaccine production technique to develop a vaccine for the bacteria, a cause of diarrhoea and vomiting that can stricken ships, schools and hospitals.

The new vaccine is unique in its origin — it was “manufactured” in a tobacco plant using an engineered plant virus. Eventually the scientists say they will be able to convert it to work for bird and swine flus also. Valsartan Divalproex Exelon Famvir...

Orlando, Fla.—National health care reform and the growth of generic drugs were the top issues noted by McKesson U.S. Pharmaceutical executives during this week’s pharmacy strategies conference here.

During the opening session, a packed room of independent pharmacists at the Gaylord Palms Resort were urged to take advantage of new technologies and programs to grow their businesses. While McKesson executives and the pharmaceutical industry support President Obama’s efforts to reform U.S. healthcare, they want pharmacists to receive fair reimbursements for the medications they dispense. ...

U.S. Adults Uninformed About Vaccine-Preventable Diseases
(0) comments,   (0) trackbacks

A survey conducted this year has found that many adults, and younger adults in particular, are unaware of the need to protect themselves from vaccine-preventable diseases, a discovery that is alarming infectious disease specialists.

"Adults are complacent about vaccine-preventable diseases and perhaps not as knowledgeable as we had hoped they would be," said William Shaffner, president-elect of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID), which sponsored the survey. ...

AMA endorses, two House committees pass HCR legislation
(0) comments,   (0) trackbacks

The American Medical Association (AMA) turned heads on Thursday when it announced its support of HR 3200, the health care reform (HCR) proposal now being considered in the House of Representatives. On Friday, two of three House committees passed the legislation in narrow votes that reflected a few Democratic defections and unanimous Republican opposition.

America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 contains a public option the GOP representatives have pegged a deal breaker, and the legislation finances HCR through a tax on households making more than $350,000 a year. Proposals favored in the Senate would use taxes on employer-paid health benefits to drum up extra federal revenues. Many physicians who are members of AMA would be subjected to the tax proposed in the House bill, but ...

Street View under fire in Japan
(0) comments,   (0) trackbacks

Google's Street View service suffered a second blow this week after numerous complaints in Japan forced the firm to start reshooting all the photos.

Google said it would lower the cameras on its cars by 40cm (16in).

On 12 May, Greece's data protection agency ordered Google to stop filming because of privacy concerns. ...
